     He was born in September 1869 at Germany.1 He was the son of August Julius Hermann Neise and Amelia Beny.1 He died on 4 May 1914 at Syracuse, Onandaga Co., New York, at age 44.1 He was buried at Woodlawn Cemetery, Syracuse,, following a funeral service at the family home on Spring Street.1
     Herman A. Neise immigrated on 19 October 1887 to New York.1 He was employed by one of the foundries in Syracuse as an iron moulder. in 1888.1

In 1890 and 1891, Herman was Assistant Secretary at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Syracuse.1

Between 1894 and 1896, he was affiliated with Lincoln Encampment No. 180 SW I.O.O.F. (International Order of Odd Fellows), Rebecka Lodge in Syracuse, and the Northside Camp No. 9075 of Modern Woodmen of America.1 He resided in 1908 at 313 Spring St., Syracuse, with his mother and the two children of his deceased sister, Martha.1

The Syracuse Herald reported his death as follows: "Coroner Moore, after completing his investigation into the death of Herman Neiss, who was killed in a plunge from his bedroom window at 10:45 last night, decided death was accidental and due to a broken neck. He had been ill since last Saturday and became delerious, and while in that state took the plunge from the window which cost him his life. Neiss's family had retired and knew nothing of the fatality until notified by neighbors about fifteen minutes afterward. Neiss was alone in his room. A neighbor saw the window being opened and then saw Neiss leap to the ground. Neiss struck the ground head foremost."1

     Ernst Richard Neiss immigrated on 19 October 1887 to New York.3 He attended public school at Syracuse.3

He apprenticed as a photo engraver at the Syracuse Times newspaper.3 He was employed by the Minneapolis Journal newspaper in 1901 at Minneapolis, Minnesota.3

He worked for the Portland Oregonian newspaper in Portland, Oregon, and then for several other newspapers in San Francisco and Oakland, California.3

Ernst and Julia traveled to Syracuse, New York, for the birth of their first child, Helen. They then returned to the west coast.3 He was naturalized on 11 December 1914 as a U.S. citizen. The papers were filed 17 Dec 1917. The certificate is numbered 516867, Vol. II, Number 2505.3 He appeared on the census of 8 January 1920 at ED #1, Alameda, Alameda Township, Alameda Co., California.3,4

He was part owner of the Phoenix Engraving Co. in Oakland and the Richie Engraving Co; President of the Photo Engravers Portland Local of Oregon; on the Board of Directors of Northern California Photo Engravers Association; his company a charter member of the Oakland Rotary Club; a member of Knights Of Pythias, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Woodmen Of The World, and the Royal Arcanum; on the Board of Directors, Alameda Chamber of Commerce; three term member of Alameda City Council; Mayor of Alameda; on the Board of Directors of Alameda Hotel Corp; and Superintendant of Western Wax Co., Emeryville, CA.5,3

Gilmore, ruled the death a suicide.1 He was buried at Onandaga Valley Cemetery, Onandaga Co., New York.1
     

In 1948, while attending Onandaga Valley Academy, Roland was the Corresponding Secretary of Phi Kappa Epsilon Fraternity.1

In 1949, Roland graduated from the Onandaga Valley Academy, Class of 1949.1 He was employed by the Lincoln National Bank at Syracuse.1

The divorce suit brought by Roland against his wife, Patrica, was dropped by the State Supreme Court due to his death.1

Between about 1950 and 1966, Mr. Neiss was Assistant Treasurer of the First Trust And Deposit Company. In 1950, he was also the President of the First Trust Club, the employee organization of the Company.1 He and Beulah G. Young resided in 1954 at 221 Monticello Drive South, Syracuse.1

On July 10, 1956, Roland and Beulah sold their home at 221 Monticello Drive S. to the Danworth United Church to be used as a parsonage for their new rector, the Rev. Charles Broadbent.1
