He was born on 16 December 1834 at Kirkintilloch, Dunbartonshire, Scotland, U.K..3,2 He was the son of John Ralston and Margaret Glendenning.

James Glendenning Ralston married Mary Amanda Johnson, daughter of Chester Stillman Johnson and Frances Elizabeth Frew, on 28 February 1863 at Kincardine, Ontario, Canada. In the Ralston Bible is the following inscription:
"This is to certify that James Glendenning Ralston of the village of Kincardine, Co. Bruce, Ont. and Mary Amanda Johnson of the Village of Kincardine, Co. Bruce, Ont. were by me united together in Holy Matrimony on the twenty-eighth day of February in the year of our Lord One Thousand eight hundred and sixty-three.
Walter Inglis,
U.P. Church
[witnesses:]
Robert MacPherson
Eveline Johnson"

Eveline was Mary Amanda Johnson's sister; Robert MacPherson was a close friend of James G. Ralston. After the death of James, Robert became the guardian of the Ralston children. The older ones fondly recalled him, remembering his kindness and solicitude. One recollection [by my grandmother, Ida] is of his concern when some of them went out on Lake Huron in rough weather. He stood on the dock, his kilts and "plaidie" fluttering in the wind, beckoning and shouting "Bairies! Come awa' oot! Come awa' oot!"2

James Glendenning Ralston died on 23 June 1877 at Bervie, Bruce Co., Ontario, Canada, at age 42.2,5 He was buried at Kincardine Cemetary, Kincardine, Ontario, Canada.2

James had a shop where he manufactured and sold boots and shoes. On 8 September, 1875, the shop and all its contents including books and records were destroyed by a fire. His losses from the fire were never completely recovered, and after his death his widow, Mary Amanda, had a struggle to raise her family. She gave music lessons and the older children worked to help support the family. At times, some of the children were cared for by relatives.2

He was born on 8 August 1805 at Cadder Parish, East Dunbartonshire, Scotland, U.K; The parish records recording his birth are the first instance in official records where the surname is spelled "Ralston."1,2,3 He was the son of James Ralton and Margaret MacLean.1

John Ralston married Margaret Glendenning, daughter of James (William?) Glendenning and Mary Coulter, on 2 August 1829 at Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1,1

John Ralston died on 22 July 1889 at Bervie, Ontario, Canada, at age 83.1 He was buried on 23 July 1889 at Kincardine Cemetery, Kincardine, Ontario, Canada, in Lot 3, Block F..1

Family tradition had it that John was a school classmate of the famed African explorer, David Livingstone. This is questionable, however, because Livingstone was eight years younger and lived in Balantyre in southern Lanarkshire until college, while John lived on the north side of Glasgow in East Dunbartonshire north of Lanarkshire. Livingstone did move to Glasgow about 1836 to attend Anderson's College but John left Scotland for Canada in 1835.4

John Ralston and Margaret Glendenning immigrated in 1835 to Lanark Co., Ontario, Canada.1,1

John Chester Ralston died on 15 July 1928 at W2421 Mission Avenue, Spokane, Spokane Co., Washington, at age 64, in his home..1,2

John C. Ralston is a truly remarkable man. His extensive acheivements in the field of engineering are particularly noteworthy, in view of the fact that he had no formal education in the subject. His knowledge was self-taught and reinforced through on-the-job experience. He was fortunate to work in the early stages of his career under mentors who took a strong interest in his development and guided him along.

In 1877, upon the death of his father and at the age of 13, John was forced to discontinue schooling in order to take odd jobs to help support his family. In 1880, he left Canada to go into the American West. There he found employment in the United States Engineer Corps [U.S.Army Corps of Engineers], in the reclamation of the Missouri River, at the beginning of the Federal improvements on the Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, and their tributaries. It was under the encouragement and personal help of the engineering staff that John's engineering self-education was directed and inspired.. The nature of the pioneering improvement plans of the Missouri River was ever fascinating and inspiring, and the complexities of the laws of hydraulics, the dynamic conditions of the water flow and channel erosions, the numberless problems and the constant search for control remedies, were a challenge in engineering study. Under such a special environment the college classroom as an educating medium was surpassed. Only in later life did John undertake a more formal course of study, attending Columbia University and the University of Chicago.

In 1882 he was transferred from the Missouri River at Omaha, Nebr., to the Potomac River, on the reclamation of the Potomac Flats at Washington, DC, and Georgetown, Maryland, harbors, and on the building of what afterward became Potomac Park, Washington, DC. He was given responsibility for the construction of the mattress foundation of the sea-wall behind which the channel dredgings were deposited to form the land of this interesting park. This sea-wall was more than five miles long, and required several seasons to complete. The wall defined the final north shore line of the main channel of the Potomac River from Georgetown Harbor, past the historic Long Bridge to the confluence with the south shore of the Washington Channel entrance to the city docks, enclosing a peninsular area that separates the two main navigable channels. This area reclaimed a large and offensive part of the mud flats of the Potomac River, while the dredgings from the widened outside channels supplied the necessary material to raise the flats well above high tide and to create a fertile acreage for landscape gardeners. More than 400 acres were thus reclaimed.

When, in 1885, the major part of the reclamation had been completed, he was tendered a position as Assistant Engineer on the Construction Staff of the Union Pacific Railroad. For the first two years of his railroad experience, he was employed directly by the late Jacob Blickensderfer, principally in collaborating the history of the Pacific Railroads. Other duties also were required in the line of reports, and in furnishing supplies for the many field parties on location in the several western and northwestern states crossed by this road. Three nights a week were devoted to study and instruction in the astronomical observatory of Mr. Blickensderfer, whose work in this field was well and favorably recognized by the United States Astronomical Observatory in Washington, DC.

In 1887, a new Chief Engineer was appointed who granted John his long cherished wish to be put into the field. An extended experience in preliminary and final exploration sites in many of the rugged western states, including Colorado, Wyoming, Nevada, Western Montana, Eastern Washington, and Idaho, and on construction work in Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana, gave him an extensive understanding of railroad engineering. He was given charge of the remodeling of the Butte, Montana, railroad yards to meet the growth of the expanding mining industries of that region. Other notable work arising out of the period was the selection of preliminary and final paths of the high-line route of what, in later years, became the famous Butte, Anaconda, and Pacific Railway, the first electrically operated, heavy-freight carrying railroad in the world.

In 1889 and 1890, he took charge of the preliminary surveys and much of the final routing of the west end of the Pacific Short Line through Wyoming and Utah, employing and directing a half dozen field parties. He succeeded in shortening the main-line distance 90 miles between the Missouri River and Ogden, Utah, and in finding the most economical crossing of the Continental Divide, nearly 1200 ft. lower than that of the nearest competitor. Across the uplands of the Big Sandy drainage, he was able to locate a long tangent on a 0.5% grade, at exceptionally low cost, the east end of which was within eight miles of the Continental Divide.

In 1890, the first period of his career ended, when a suspension of active railroad development in the West was declared. John immediately took up steel skeleton building construction, foundation work, and elevated railroad erection in Chicago, IL, and pursued the occupation until 1897. During this period he erected a number of early steel skeleton buildings and special structures, especially for the Illinois Steel Company in South Chicago, and for the Lake Street Elevated Road, including the downtown loop along Lake Street to and down Wabash Avenue to Harrison Street. This structure constituted the first downtown loop, and was quickly followed by the joint loop structures, located in what has since developed into the most congested metropolitan district of the world.

Several notable steel skeleton structures were erected in Buffalo, NY, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, PA, including the Ellicott Square Building in Buffalo, and the Presbyterian Building in Philadelphia, each notable in its day for size and design.

In the midst of these activities, in the spring of 1897, John was called to Spokane, WA, by some of his earlier friends of Butte, MT, days, to assist in some mineral developments and in the construction of reduction works. He assisted in the design and construction of the largest plant of its kind in the State of Washington. In this third period of his career, he established himself as a Consulting Engineer, his practice quickly growing and covering examinations, reports, and valuations in the fields of hydraulic development, hydraulic power, and later, hydroelectric power in British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, California, Montana, and Nevada, involving a fascinating diversity of technology.

Intense involvement in those fields, especially in California, led to an investigation of the water supply and power possibilities of the Toulomne and its Hetch Hetchy Valley, the Stanislaus, and the Mokelumne, out of part of which, together with parts of the Merced, was finally carved the so-called Hetch Hetchy water supply for San Francisco. His work was a small part of what led to the proposal to build a dam in the Yosemite National Park, a plan that came under intense controversy about 10 years later for its anti-environmental aspects, which brought the Sierra Club into the fight.

Another interesting work was his study of the hydraulics involved in the disposal of the underground waters of the famous Comstock Lode, their siphonic behavior, vadose waters, accumulations, and colonization. A year was spent on this work and on the plans for the complete unwatering of certain of the leaner parts of the Lode, involving a blending of the technology of Civil Engineering and the rudiments of Economic Geology.

In April, 1906, the San Francisco earthquake destroyed much of that beautiful city. During the quake, John was severely injured. He underwent major surgery and was left a permanent invalid. This put an end to all field activities and left him physically able to pursue only a limited consulting practice.

Despite his physical handicap, in 1907 he accepted an appointment as City Engineer for the City of Spokane, WA. His first task was to reorganize the engineering staff. He succeeded in bringing into that sadly depleted organization an esprit de corps and a technological staff of singular merit, one comparable to the best metropolitan standard. In spite of the atrophying influences of indurated city politics, a two year period of decisive and productive engineering activities followed. Under this regime, he was able to replace eight old and dilapidated wooden Howe truss bridges by designing and building an equal number of reinforced concrete structures, literally making Spokane the "City of Bridges". Among these structures was his crowning achievement, the famous Monroe Street Bridge, said by many at the time to be the most monumental concrete arch bridge in the United States. The main deck is a segmental arch of 290 ft. span, with a rise of 140 ft., making it the longest concrete bridge in the nation in that period.

A most beloved feature of the Monroe Street Bridge is its ornamentation: eight life-sized bas-relief concrete bison skulls, four facing out and four facing in, on the covered wagon-shaped lookout pavilions, reflecting the city's pride in its pioneer heritage. In 1920, a jury of West Coast architects listed the Monroe Street Bridge as one of the ten most notable examples of Spokane architecture. In 1975, the Bridge was listed in the National Registry of Historical Places. By the 1990's the bridge had deteriorated to the point where the city decided to replace it. However, the outcry from the community dictated that Ralston's bridge be rehabilitated rather than replaced. In January, 2003, the bridge was closed for restoration and it reopened in September of 2005, looking exactly like it had originally.

In addition, large paving areas were inaugurated for the first time for the city, and a new underground water supply of exceptional quantity and purity was designed and built under his direction, all of which transformed this struggling western outpost into a modern metropolitan city. But in the end, petty city politics took over and John was unjustly removed from his position by the City Council, citing alleged incompetence, and his assistant was promoted into his chair.

During his invalid years from 1906 until his death, aside from his work as City Engineer, he continued to act as a consulting engineer, reporting on a number of hydroelectric projects and on straight hydraulic developments. Prior to the entrance of the United States into and during World War I, he served as a member of the Naval Consulting Board for the State of Washington. During this time he was also one of about 2,000 entrants who were asked to submit plans and specifications for the dissemination of American propaganda among the German people. His plans were accepted and he was one of the first four to receive Presidential recognition and a monetary reward.

He also served as a member of the Committee on Development of the American Society Of Civil Engineers, sharing actively in its deliberations during the period 1918-1920. From 1920 to 1924, he served as a member of Engineering Council. In this Council, he represented, as the Executive Member, the states of California, Nevada, Oregon, Idaho, Washington, and Montana. From 1900 until 1918, he acted as Consulting Engineer, and, for a part of that time, as Vice-President, of the Pacific Coast Pipe Company with a factory at Seattle. This company manufactured all sizes of wood-stave pipe. He was one of several engineers on the Pacific Coast who developed and made popular this type of pipe for more extended use, and this work is considered to have been a great contribution to the current engineering practice of the time.

He was an early worker in the Boy Scout movement, a pioneer in the social hygiene movement, a deep lover of the arts, and ever willing to aid in the betterment and beautifying of his city, having planned outlines for the economic and scenic development of the falls and rivers of Spokane. He was President of the Art Association, and a brilliant, original, and much sought after speaker. He was a member of the Spokane Engineering Society, the Seattle Engineering Society, the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, the Cosmos Club of Washington, DC, the Spokane City Club, and the American Society of Civil Engineers. He was a 32nd degree Mason, a staunch Republican, and a communicant of All Saints' Episcopal Cathedral.2,1,3
