She was born on 11 July 1598 at N. Benfleet, County Essex, England.3 She was the daughter of Col. Edmund Reade and Elizabeth Cooke. She married John Lake, son of John Lake and Elizabeth Sandell, circa 1616.3 She died in September 1672 at Ipswitch, MA, at age 74.3

Several members of her family emigrated to New England, some of them leaders in the Puritan movement-- her brother, Col. Thomas Reade, later in Cromwell's army; her sister Elizabeth and her husband John Winthrop, Jr; her sister, Martha Reade Eppes, later wife of Samuel Symonds, Dep Governor of Mass., and children Daniel and Elizabeth Eppes; and her stepfather, Rev. Hugh Peters. (Her mother, Elizabeth Reade Peters, sailed at a later date.) Margaret Reade Lake, with her daughters Hannah and Martha, accompanied the party which sailed on the ships "Abigail" and "Defence" and arrived in Boston Harbor on Oct 6, 1635.

Her husband, John Lake, remained in England. He may not have adhered so strongly to the Puritan ideas of reform; or, perhaps, as suggested from excerpts from Winthrop letters, his health at the time may not have been up the the arduous journey and hardships in the colony. When in London in 1654, Rev. Hugh Peters reported to the family in New England that "John Lake is alive and lusty." Again in 1657 he stated in correspondence that "John Lake live[s] still." In a letter of Jan 18, 1661, to Gov Winthrop, who was back in England at the time, Mrs. Lake wrote, "might I not bee to troublssome to you I would have desired yors. to have done mee yt courtesy as to have inquired concerning my husband's death and how he ended his dayes, as also to have inquired of my cousen Thomas Cooke, whether hee knew whether their was any thing left mee or no.... I would desire you inquire whether my sister Breadcale who dwells in Lee [Leigh], in Essex, bee liveing.. You may heare of her, if liveing, at Irongate where boats weekly come from Lee."

For many years, she lived with the family of her brother-in-law, Gov. Winthrop, at New London, CT, abd she is mentioned repeatedly in the Winthrop family correspondence. In the last decade of her life, she lived at Ipswitch, MA, with her daughter, Martha (Lake) Harris, and of her brother-in-law, Deputy Gov. Samuel Symonds.
