He was born on 19 May 1939 at Cle Elum, Washington.1 He was the son of Francis W. Scobee.2 28 January 1986, he was killed in space in the NASA Space Shuttle Challenger disaster.3

The following was published in "The Scoby Scribe," Vol 2, Issue 2, April 1984:

NASA ASTRONAUT FRANCIS R. (DICK) SCOBEE, Major, USAF, Retired. Dick Scobee was born May 19, 1939 in Cle Elum, Washington, son of Mr. and Mrs. Francis W. Scobee, who presently reside in Yakima, Washington. He graduated from Auburn Senior High School, Washington, in 1957 and then enlisted in the Air Force. He was stationed at Kelly AFB and while there attended night school, earning college credits which led to his selection for the Airman's Education and Commissioning Program. During this time he married June Kent of San Antonio. On January 30, 1961, Kathie R. was born, and Richard W. followed on April 13, 1964. In 1965 Dick graduated from the University of Arizona with a BS in Aerospace Engineering and also received his commission. The next year he received his wings and soon completed a combat tour in Vietnam. He returned to the US and attended the USAF Aerospace Research Pilot School at Edwards AFB in California, graduating in 1972. He was selected by NASA as an astronaut candidate in 1978. After completing a training and evaluation period in 1979, he became eligible for future space shuttle flights. Besides flying, Dick enjoys oil painting, woodworking, motor cycling, racquet ball, and jogging. He has brown hair and blue eyes and is 6'1". Dick is scheduled to pilot a mid-1984 space flight! Watch for him!
----

He was appointed Commander of NASA Mission STS 51-L, aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger. The mission was especially noteworthy because the crew included a civilian schoolteacher as an observer.

The flight was described in the following Associated Press release:

Jan. 29, 1986
(AP) CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Following an apparently flawless launch, a catastrophic explosion blew apart the space shuttle Challenger 74 seconds after lift-off Tuesday.

The explosion occurred about the time Challenger was to enter a period of maximum aerodynamic pressure when wind and other atmospheric conditions would place the maximum force on the outside of the vehicle.

The tank burst into a fireball that destroyed Challenger high above the Atlantic while crew families and NASA officials watched in despair from the Cape. Other observers noted that the boosters continued to fly crazily through the sky after the explosion, apparently under full power.

A source who monitored the Challenger at the Johnson Space Center in Houston said the blast occurred "unexpectedly and with absolutely no warning. There were no signs of abnormalities on the screens."

"We will not speculate as to the specific cause of the explosion based on that footage, said Jesse Moore, NASA's top shuttle administrator. National Aeronautics and Space Administration officials are organizing an investigation aboard, and Moore said it will take a "careful review" of all data "before we can reach any conclusions."

"I regret ... to report that based on very preliminary searches of the ocean where the Challenger impacted ... that these searches have not revealed any evidence that the crew of the Challenger survived," Moore told a midafternoon news conference Tuesday.

The purpose of the mission was to release and retrieve one satellite to study Halley's comet and launch another to become a part of the spacebased shuttle communications network.

Flags at Cape Canaveral were lowered to half-staff. The countdown clock that marks the progress of the mission continued for hours.
