He was born circa 1683. He was the son of Cyprian Stevens and Mary Willard. He married Prudence Rice, daughter of John Rice and Tabitha Stone, circa 1705. He died in 1769 at Rutland, MA.
From "History of Rutland, Mass.", by Jonas Reed:
Joseph Stevens and his wife Prudence (Rice) were from Sudbury, Mass. He was proprietor of house lots No. 15 and 56; part of his division land was located on Steven's Hill, and 200 acres on and adjoining Turkey Hill. He was one of the first settlers, and exposed to the dangers and privations incident to those that commence a settlement in a wilderness. He was chosen for many offices in the proprietory, town, church, and militia. One of the first Selectmen, assessors, treasurers, etc., which offices he filled several years; clerk of the proprietors, and one of the committee to set off their lands; a deacon in the church; a captain in the militia, etc.
"There were no roads. Dea. Stevens put up a hovel at the meadow bordering on Stevens' Brook, 5 mi. from his dwelling, where he went daily to feed his cattle. He was a man of usefulness and prosperity, also a man of sorrow. On Aug 14, 1723,after a family devotion and a friendly breakfast, he and 4 young sons went to the meadow to collect fodder for the coming winter. While making hay, they were surprised by 5 Indians. [His sons,] Samuel and Joseph were slain, and the other boys taken captive. They were carried into Canada, held in captivity for nearly a year, and were not redeemed without great expense, and two journeys of the father, Dea. Stevens, which, with other misfortunes, so straightened the circumstances of Dea. Stevens and his wife in their old age that they were under the necessity of having assistance from the town they had helped to build up."1
