The earliest mention of Walter Atte Stone was "on the day after Jove after the Feast of St. Andrew the Apostle, 4 Henry V." (Thursday 3 December 1415) when he was a witness in regard to ownership of some land in the village of Dedham. The only other record discovered of him is in a volume of fragmentary abstracts of fines, etc, from court rolls of various manors in Essex and Suffolk under the jurisdiction of the Honour of Clare... "to this court came Walter Atte Stone and made fealty to the lord for a tenement and garden adjacent held by copy of the court roll which late was of William Atte Stone, his father. Walter Atte Stone died after 1431, the exact time has not been learned and the name of his wife has not been found. He had at least one son, John, born about 1430.1

The parish of Ardleigh, in Tendring Hundred, County Essex, is about 55 miles from London and is about 3 miles in length and 2-1/2 in width. The parish church dedicated to St. Mary the Virgin, is a fine structure in excellent condition, part of it built in about 1450, restored in 1883. The parish registers are preserved from 1555. The court rolls of the Manor of Boville in Ardleigh have been preserved for many of the years from 1359 to 1599.1 Only three records of William Atte Stone have come to light, the first in a lawsuit in 1398, the next as a juror at a court held in 1415 and the last in a court roll recorded after his death in 1431. He died 1430 or 1431; when his son Walter Atte Stone succeeded to his copyhold in Ardleigh. The name of the wife of William Atte Stone is not known and records have been found of only one child, Walter.1
