He was born circa 1636.1 He was the son of Christopher Wadsworth and Grace (?).1 He married Abigail Lindall, daughter of James Lindall and Mary (?), circa 1660.2
Capt. Samuel Wadsworth died on 21 April 1676 at Sudbury, MA, when, two and a half months after the attack on Lancaster, Capt. Wadsworth and his troops were ambushed and attacked near Sudbury by more than 500 Indians. "Our soldiers", Cotton Mather later wrote, "fought like men and more so. After a desperate struggle they retreated and succeeded in gaining the western side of Green Hill. There they gallantly defended themselves for four hours. The Indians set fire to the woods, so that our fathers were almost blinded and suffocated by the heat and smoke. They were forced to abandon their position, whereupon the Indians fell on them and the little band was literally cut to pieces." He and 30 of his men were slain.
The men were buried in a common grave in Sudbury. The first monument on the battlefield was placed there by Samuel's son Benjamin. In 1852, the state appropriated money for the erection of a monument on which the original slab is preserved, to the memory of Capt. Wadsworth and his officers and men.
When he was about two and a half years old, he came to America on the ship, "Lion," with his parents, and the family settled in Duxbury, just to the north of Plymouth Plantation.
The early records of Duxbury were destroyed by fire. The first recorded record of Samuel Wadsworth is in Bridgewater, then called Duxbury plantation, the first interior settlement of the old colony, incorporated in 1656. He was enrolled as a taxpayer from 1655-1665. The lands he owned were part of the grant of his father Christopher, who was a large proprietor there. He came into possession of it in 1644.
During King Philip's War, an 18 month conflict between colonial settlements and a group of disgruntled Indian tribes, Samuel served as a Captain in the militia. In his 2006 book, "Mayflower," Nathaniel Philbrick relates an incident involving our ancestor.
Two friendly Indians, James and Job, from a group of what were called "Praying Indians," were sent by the Massachusetts Bay authorities to spy on the hostile Nipmuck Indians.
James was the first to return, on January 24. He reported that with most of the English settlements along the Massachusetts portion of the Connecticut River abandoned because of Indian activity, the Nipmucks planned to attack villages to the east including Medfield, Marlborough, Sudbury, Groton, and Concord, and starting with Lancaster. But, despite other corroborating reports, the Massachusetts authorities chose to dismiss James' warnings as untrustworthy testimony from just another Indian.
But, at 10:00 pm on the evening of February 9, a Daniel Gookin, at his home in Cambridge, was awakened by an urgent pounding on his door. It was Job, starving and exhausted, having traveled on makeshift snowshoes through drifting snow from the western frontier. He had hurried to report that there were 400 Nipmuck and Narragansett Indian warriors about to descend on Lancaster and there was very little time-- they were set to attack the next morning at daybreak.
Gookin leaped out of bed and sent a dispatch to Marlborough, where Capt. Samuel Wadsworth and forty troops were stationed. The messenger rode all night and by morning Capt. Wadsworth and his men were riding furiously for Lancaster, about ten miles away.
The Indians had burned the bridge outside Lancaster, but Wadsworth and his troops were able to get their horses across the still-smoldering timbers. Up ahead, the soldiers could see smoke rising into the skies and hear the shouts of the Indians and firing of muskets. The attack had already begun.
The Indians had already killed many of the settlers and burned their houses. As Wadsworth arrived on the scene, the Indians thought it best to clear out, but not before they grabbed a number of settlers, some seriously injured, as hostages. One of the hostages, Mary Rowlandson, the wife of Landcaster's minister, later wrote an account of her tragic experiences, "The Sovereignty and Goodness of God," which became one of America's first best-sellers.3
