Mrs. (?) Chilton1
F, d. January 1620/21
Mrs. (?) Chilton married James Chilton, son of Lyonell Chilton [Chylton] and unknown (?), before 1587.2,1
Mrs. (?) Chilton died in January 1620/21 at Plymouth, MA; about a month after the Pilgrims arrived in Plymouth. She was one of many who died at that time of "the first infection."3,1
It has been suggested that the wife of James Chilton was Susanna Furner, the daughter of James' step-mother by her first husband, Francis Furner. However, there are serious chronological problems with that hypothesis.2,4,1
Sometime between 1608 when the first Separatists took refuge in Holland, and 1615 when his daughter, Isabella, was married in Leiden, James Chilton took his family to Holland to join the Pilgrim contingent.5,1
There is mention in the records of St. Peter Parish, Sandwich, Kent, that "[blank] the wife of James Chilton" was excommunicated from the church. This may well have been for holding Separatist views, against the position of the Church of England.1

He was born circa 1556 at Canterbury, County of Kent, England, England.1,2 He was the son of Lyonell Chilton [Chylton] and unknown (?).
James Chilton married Mrs. (?) Chilton before 1587.3,2
James Chilton died on 8 December 1620 at Cape Cod Bay on board the Mayflower; ; his death date has been given in various sources as 6, 8, or 18 December. The best evidence is from a long-lost note book kept by William Bradford, one of the pilgrim leaders.2,3
He was a tailor, and was listed as a freeman in Canturbury in 1583.
Except for three daughters, Isabel, Ingle, and Mary, none of his other children appear to have lived to maturity.3
James Chilton and his family moved circa 1600 to at Sandwich, County of Kent.3
In Sandwich, he met Moses Fletcher who was destined to be a fellow Mayflower passenger, as well as other Separatists who later went to Holland, and was thus drawn into the Pilgrim movement.3
Sometime between 1608 when the first Separatists took refuge in Holland, and 1615 when his daughter, Isabella, was married in Leiden, James Chilton took his family to Holland to join the Pilgrim contingent.4,2
On April 30th, 1619, while walking through the streets of Leyden with his daughter, Ingle, he was unexpectedly struck on the head by a heavy rock thrown by a group of boys who were demonstrating against a group of Armenians meeting nearby and mistook him for one of that group. He was injured severely enough that he was taken to the town surgeon, Jacob Hey, for treatment. It has been thought that the incident was one of the reasons that the Pilgrims felt themselves less welcome in Holland, and contributed to the decision to undertake the voyage tor New England.5,6
On 6 September 1620, after a delay resulting from an unsuccesful first departure and return to port caused by the breakdown of the Speedwell, the second ship in the pilgrim's fleet, the Mayflower departed from Plymouth, England, sailing alone in "a prosperous wind." James Chilton was the oldest passenger with the possible exception of Elder William Brewster.7
James Chilton was one of 41 men aboard the Mayflower who signed the Mayflower Compact.6,8
