Notes from Family Group Sheet by Dean A, Doyal, 25 Dec 1999 (DOC 033):

1. When Priscilla DOYLE presented her husband's will in court on 27 April 1741, she was bonded by the court along with Samuel CONNER and James KEENE, neighbors of the DOYLES, to make an inventory of Edward's estate. On 25 May 1741 Priscilla again appeared in court to present this inventory. Edward's accumulated wealth included, among other things, 40 pounds of "putor", a "brass kittle", brass candlestick and snuffers, a pair of old flesh forks and a "cuting" knife, an old looking glass, an old Bible and "p-rair" book, two pair woolards and various other pieces of furniture and animals. His estate, excluding the land, was valued at L19.6.5.

2. The next record found about Priscilla DOYLE was in the estate of George MASON III exhibited on 27 Sep 1742 by Ann MASON, the guardian of the orphaned George MASON IV. The MASON Family was a prominent family in Fairfax County, Virginia, with large land holdings. George MASON III made 15 leases of approximately 2000 acres during the period 1722 - 1734. The yearly income from these leases amounted to 8090 pounds of tobacco and must have been a welcome addition to the MASON Estate.

3. Smaller land holders often made leases of 100 acres from the larger landholders in an effort to increase their tobacco production and their family incomes. Priscilla DOYLE probably made this type of agreement with the MASONS in 1741.. Under the accounts of George MASON III's estate was a credit to Priscilla DYLE (sic) "for a bond she had of his father to make over the land." In payment Priscilla owned 4000 pounds of tobacco and L2.0.0.

4. Priscilla DOYLE was named as Priscilla NICHOLS in her father's will dated 24 June 1743 (Fairfax County Will Book A: 87-88). This indicated Priscilla remarried sometime between 27 Sep 1742, when she was last reflected in records as Priscilla DOYLE, and that date- Simon NICHOLS, probably her second husband, was a witness to Simon CONNELL'S will, as was Priscilla. A common thread of evidence between the will of Simon CONNELL and that of Edward DOYLE is the signature of Priscilla. Her mark on both Simon's will and the court inventory of Edward's estate was a backward "P".

5. Several records appear in Fairfax County, Virginia during the 1760's to show that Priscilla and Simon NICHOLS lived there prior to the Revolutionary War. In three records between 1762 and 1764, Solomon NICHOLS and his wife Priscilla were defendants in a suit filed by Simon Connell DOYLE. The records of the minutes are brief and few details are given. On 18 March 1762 the defendants were grantred "leave to imparle suit." (Fairfax County, Virginia Court Minute Book 1756:695.) The following year, on 18 March 1763, the court minutes indicate the case was referred to George JOHNSTON and Hugh WEST as arbiters (Fairfax Co., VA Court Minute Book 1762:846. The final record on the case suggests it was settled by the arbiters prior to 21 March 1764 (Fairfax Co., VA Court Minute Book 1763:86.

6.     Solomon NICHOLS purchased 220 acres of land from John ROBERTS, a neighbor of the DOYLES and the CONNELLS, on 16 October 1752 (Fairfax Co., VA Deed Book C:372). This land was on the North Run of Pohick Creek, Between 1761 and 1774 Solomon NICHOLS was listed on the Fairfax Rent Rolls for these 220 acres. In 1767 Solomon NICHOLS witnessed the deed transfering Thomas CONNELL'S inherited land (probably the estate left to Elizabeth CONNELL, his mother, by his father, Simon CONNELL) to James DOYAt-l- (Fairfax Co., VA Deed Book Gl:308-312).
