George Geer1,2

M, b. circa 1621, d. 1726
He was born circa 1621 at Heavitree, near Exeter, Devonshire, England.2

George Geer married Sarah Allyn, daughter of Robert Allyn and Sarah (?), on 17 February 1658 at New London, Connecticut.3 He died in 1726 at Preston, Connecticut.3

George Geer was also known as Gear or Gere because he apparently had little or no schooling as a youngster and, although he held responsible positions later in life, he never wrote his name in deeds or wills, but simply made his mark. As a consequence, his name was spelled in a variety of ways by those who had occasion to write it.2

George Geer immigrated in 1635 to Boston, Massacheussets; with his brother, Thomas. The boys were left orphans when quite young and were raised by their uncle. As they were heirs to a considerable estate, the uncle wanted them out of the way so the inheritance would be his. He wrote to a ship captain about to sail for America, requesting that he take the boys with him. The boys were sent to the boat with the letter and were instructed to remain on board until they received an answer. They remained as directed but the ship set sail before they realized the deception.2

George Geer moved to New London, Connecticut, in 1651, with Robert Allyn, father of his future wife.2

George Geer resided in October 1665 at what is known today as Ledyard, Connecticut, on a farm he purchased from Robert Isbell. The northern boundary of his farm was at that time the line between New London and Norwich. In early colonial times, the township of New London covered a large area both east and west of the Thames River. In 1705, the township was divided and the area east of the Thames became Groton. Then in 1836, Groton was divided and the larger, northern portion was named Ledyard.3

At the first town meeting of Groton, in December 1705, George was chosen to be the fourth townsman for the new town. He resided in Groton until five or six years before his death when he moved to Preston to live with his daughter, Margaret Gates.3

He was totally blind the last few years of his life.3
