FatherDaniel Harris b. 22 Nov 1700, d. 25 Nov 1771
MotherLydia Hill d. 26 Jan 1767
He was born on 27 April 1754 at Preston, New London Co., Connecticut. He was the son of Daniel Harris and Lydia Hill. He married Martha Parks, daughter of Jacob Park and Sarah, on 6 April 1780 at Preston, New London Co., Connecticut.4,5 He married Malinda Fisk on 28 May 1840.6 He died on 13 June 1843 at Becket, Berkshire Co., Massachussetts, at age 89.7,8 He was buried at Becket Center Cemetery, Becket, Berkshire Co., Massachussetts.7
John Harris enlisted from Stonington, Connecticut, and served as a Corporal and a Sergeant for 15 months in a Rhode Island Regiment under Capt. Thomas Thompson and Colonel James Stanton. He re-enlisted in March 1778 for another 12 months under Capt. Joshua Babcock and Colonel Jonathan Topham.

During his service, he took part in two remarkable military operations. The first occurred in the summer of 1777, when Gen. Washington desperately needed a high ranking British officer to trade with the British for an American General who had been captured. A Lt. Col. William Barton, a Rhode Island hatter turned soldier, received intelligence that a Major General Richard Prescott had taken quarters in a summer house outside Newport, RI, well behind British lines, to escape the heat of the city. Barton gathered a hand-picked group of 4 officers and 35 soldiers, including James Harris, in a plan which was the forerunner of a Navy SEAL type operation. The commandos pushed off in five whaleboats near Tivertown on Narragansett Bay on July 4, 1777,and for the next six days they stealthily slipped south through heavy concentrations of British ships and troops encamped along the shore. Reaching cover near the General's house, Barton's men sneaked ashore at night and discovered that Prescott's headquarters, confident in its security so far from enemy lines, had posted only one sentry. They quickly overpowered him and burst into Prescott's house and charged up the stairs to the General's room. There they found Prescott, relaxing in his nightclothes. They stood by while the bewildered General slipped on his breeches and waistcoat over his nightshirt, but he couldn't find his shoes. As the commandos prepared to leave the house, James Harris spotted a handsome silver cup belonging to Prescott, and grabbed it as a trophy. The General was forced to stumble barefooted across an open field to the boats, which then slipped away as quietly as they had come.

Later in the war, with American forces tied up fighting the British along the seaboard, Indian bands allied with the British were terrorizing the settlers along the frontier in western New York. Gen. Washington put together a force of miscellaneous units, including James Harris' unit, to sweep through the troubled area and disband and drive out the marauding Indians. Known as Sullivan's Expedition Against the Six Nations of the Iriquiois, the operation lasted several months and required incredible effort and endurance from the soldiers, fighting swampy and difficult terrain, bad weather, and poor logistical support. Tactically, the operation was a success. The Indian tribes were smashed, their villages burned and crops destroyed, and they temporarily retreated to be under the protection of the British in Canada. But after the war was over, the raids on American settlers resumed, and expanded on through the west.9

Moved to Becket, MA, soon after his first marriage.10 He moved About 1810, he moved to Amherst, OH. in 1810.10
