Edward Doyle1,2,3,4

M, b. circa 1700, d. between 27 March 1740 and 27 April 1741
He was born circa 1700 at possibly Wexford County, Ireland, or Wales.5,2 He married Priscilla Connell, daughter of Simon Connell and Elizabeth (?), circa 1723 at VA.2,4 He died between 27 March 1740 and 27 April 1741 at Truro Parish, Prince William (later Fairfax) Co., VA.6
NOTES from Family Group Sheet, by Dean A. Doyal, 25 Dec 1999
Edward DOYLE "The Elder"-.

1. The earliest ancestor in America found to date was Edward DOYLE (DOYAL)(DYAL). He lived in Prince William County, Virginia at least by 1733 when he owed Thomas KERFOOT L20. KERFOOT died in l733 and his estate accounts were presented in court on 9 January 1734/5 (Julian/Gregorian Date) when Edward was held accountable for the debt according to Prince William County Will Book C:23.

The book "Emigrants To Pennsylvania 1641--1819" edited by Michael Tepper, Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1979, on page 12-13 shows that Ed DOYLE came to America as a servant, along with 10 other people, including two women, aboard the "Lion of Liverpool" which arrived here [Pennsylvania] 14 August 1683. (Note the ink for the month is a blot and the figure could be either a "3" or an "8". Other entries on this page refer to the 8th month i.e. August.) This Ed DOYLE may or may not be of our family. He arrived with Joseph and Elizabeth FISHER and their four children. Joseph was from Stillorgin near Dublin, Ireland, a yeoman, born in Elton in Chesahire, Emgland.

Ed DOYLE was required to serve 4 years, to be paid L4.10 and given 50 acres of land, and to be freed 14 Aug 1687. 2. Robert T WATKINS, a DOYLE Family researcher from Pasadena, Maryland, stated in 1991 that according to his family knowledge Edward DOYLE came from Wexford County, Ireland. This is unsubstantiated, but possibly true. The DOYLE Family name traces predominantly to Wexford and surrounding counties.

According to family information passed on to Dean A DOYAL, of Newport News, Virginia, Edward DOYAL came to America from Liverpool, England in the early 1700's at the age of 16 years- This information has not been verified and could possibly be true.

Neither DIAL, DOYAL, nor WATKINS have any information about the parentage of Edward DOYLE (DOYAL). Based on the prevailing practice of naming the first born male child after the paternal grandfather, Edward's father was probably James DOYLE and he probably lived from about 1640 or 1650 to about 1700. Edward DOYLE was probably not the first-born son of his father, because almost all of the early settlers in American were second sons who could not inherit land or money from their fathers due to the practice of primogeniture or leaving ones wealth and holdings to the oldest son. one of the prime reasons for coming to America in the early 1700's was to acquire land to make one's living and fortune.

The family of John and Mary DOYLE of Richmond County, Virginia in 1717 has not been linked with the DOYLE Family of Prince William County, Virginia. (Richmond Co., VA Land Grant, Book 5, page 181.) Neither has the Dennis DOYLE Family of Albemarle Co., VA in 1741. (History of Albemarle Co., VA by E WOODS.) No other DOYLE Family members found in early 1700 Virginia records have been associated with this Edward DOYLE family.

3. According to information researched by John Augustus ("Gus") DOYLE, of Cincinnati, Ohio Edward DOYLE Sr (sic) was born in Wales in 1705 and went to Virginia before 1750 - "this is proved through sale of land and purchases, etc." His wife's name was not known to Gus- Gus said, "We know Edward came before 1750, he could have been the son of Isaac [DOYLE] who went to America in 1715. There are many Doyles in Penn and they all had large families." Gus then named Edward's children as:

Edward DOYLE (DIAL) "The Younger", born 1725, moved to PA in 1772, proved through purchase of land, etc.

Robert DOYLE
Eliz DOYLE, married Jordon OAST.
William DOYLE
Joseph DOYLE

4. On 9 December 1740 Edward DOYLE Sr received a grant of 246 acres of land along the North Run of Pohick Creek. This land was adjacent to lands owned by Simon CONNEL(L) and by John ROBERTS (Northern Neck Virginia Grant Book E:220). Pohick Run which derived its name from the "pohickory", or hickory tree, was located in the administrative district of the Church of England (the official church of Colonial Virginia) known as Truro Parish in what is now called Fairfax County, Virginia. (See maps pages 5 and 6.)

4. Edward DYAL Sr (DOYLE) died sometime between 29 March 1740 and 27 April 1741. These are the dates when his will was written and when it was presented in court by his wife and executrix, Priscilla [CONNELL]. All of his property was willed to his children: sons James and Edward; and his only daughter, Elizabeth. By the terms of the will, James received the plantation on which the family then lived plus 40 acres adjoining "on the north side of the North Run of the Pohick." Edward received 80 acres joining that given to James. Elizabeth received 77 acres which was the remaining tract of land. This is the only record that has been found about Elizabeth except for a subsequent deed of sale by James DOYLE of her 77 acres which referenced this inheritance. It should be noted that Robert T WATKINS claims to be a descendant of this James DOYLE. The preparer of this genealogy, Dean A DOYAL, is convinced he is a descendant of Edward DYAL (DOYLE). Edward Doyle was also known as Edward Doyle "The Elder".

Notes from Family Group Sheet, Edward Doyle, The Younger, and Elizabeth Vance, by Dean A. Doyal, 25 Dec 1999:

1. According to Fayette Co., PA Deed Book A, page 360 Adam HATFIELD deeded land to Edward DOYLE, 22 April 1782. Witnesses were: Jno BEASON, Isaac BEASON, and Robt BEAL. The transaction was recorded 1 March 1791.

2. The 1790 Census, Bullskin Township, Fayette Co., PA listed Edward DOYLE's household as having:

4 free white males 16 years and over, (Presumably these were: Edward, & his three oldest unmarried sons.) Son William is shown living separately on the 1790 Census and George DYAL is shown living separately on the 1800 Census.

1     free white male under 15 (Presumably his youngest son.); and,

2 free white females. (Presumably his wife, Elizabeth and his daughter, Eliza.)

3. According to Lewis Co., KY Land Record Book A, page 169, Edward, Elizabeth, Mary, Simon, and Sam DOYAL, et al, were deeded 680 acres of land on the Ohio River by Jessie EWELL, in 1810.

4. According to "Early History of Salt Lick and Springfield Townships, Fayette Co., PA," by Franklin ELLIS, 1931, page 50, (Fl57 F2E4 Swem Lib), Edward DOYLE, among others, petitioned foi- the building of a new road in the area in December 1784. The road was to be located from Broad Fort to Christian Perkey's mill, and thence to the Redstone Old Fort. At the March 1785 term of the Court Robert BEAL, Edward DOYLE, Andrew ARNOLD, William MILLER, and Joshua DICKERSON report "that the road was of great use and very necessary, as well for the County adjacent as for the inhabitants to said road in general, and we do presume it to be necessary to be of the width of thirty feet." After due consideration the Court ordered "that the said road be opened, cut, cleared, and bridged, twenty-five feet wide."

5. According to Franklin ELLIS'S book "History of Fayette County, Pennsylvania", page 492, in the year 1790 Edward DOYLE served as Constable of Bullskin Township. Other officers in 1790 were; William ROBISON and Henry WHITE, overseers of the poor; Adam HATFIELD and George BATCHELOR, were supervisors of roads.

6. According to Joan GODFREY'S (Ruth Joan VERGNE) record of the DOYLE Family history (as prepared by John Augustus DOYLE) Edward DIAL'S children were, (1) William DIAL, born 1747, moved to Ohio; (2 & 3) Daniel Dial -- George DIAL, 4th PA Line lists them Dan'l & Geo DOYLE; (4) Ed DYAL III to Ky d. 1796; (5) John DYAL b. 1762 Winchester, VA, d. 1847 Lewis Co., KY@; (6) Simon; (7) Alex - Nellie RAWLINGS; (8) Eliza; and (9 & 10) two more names unknown. Note that chart page 1, The Early Pennsylvania Dials, listed only five children: William, Daniel, George, Edward, and John.

7. According to information found in the files researched by John Augustus ("Gus") DOYLE, of Cincinnati, Edward DIAL (sic) Jr had five sons-

William DIAL, born 1747, went to Ohio and married Eliza WALKER.
Daniel DIAL, 4th Paline, a Confederate soldier.
George DIAL, born 1756, a Confederate soldier.
Edward DYAL (sic), Went to Kentucky, d. Oct 1796 in Harrison Co., KY.
John DYAL (sic), born 27 Nov 1762, went to Kentucky, d. 8 Dec 1845.

8. Edward DOYLE and his wife, Elizabeth, sold 90 acres of land, part of a larger tract of 490 acres, for l00 pounds (current money) to John WHITE and his heirs 3 March 1767 in Frederick Co., VA. (See Deed Book 11, page 297, Frederick Co., VA.)

9. That same deed shows Elizabeth DOYLE'S maiden name to have been VANCE, as John VANCE was named as the father of Elizabeth. It also shows Elizabeth to have been previously married under the name of MATHEWS.

10. Minutes of the Court of Yohogania Co., VA state that the last Will and Testament of John VANCE, deceased, was proved (1778) by the oath of William CRAWFORD and Samuel HICKS. Margaret VANCE and Edward DOYLE took the oath of Executor and Executrix and entered into Bond. (See Annals of Carnegie Museum, page 123, Minutes of Yohogania Co., VA. Note Yohogania County was formed in 1776 and discontinued in 1786.)

11. According to some reports Edward DOYLE and Elizabeth VANCE had ten (10) children, two unidentified. So far that theory can not be substantiated. For the time being this report shows only eight (8) children from this marriage.

12. In 1794 Edward DOYLE paid taxes in Mason Co., KY. That same year he also, from Harrison Co., KY gave a power of attorney to his trusted friend, William MOUNTS, to return to Fayette Co., PA and sell off his mills and 25 acres of land on Mounts Creek, Bullskin Twp. Edward made his mark. This action, and other Harrison County Court records, seem to prove that Edward DOYLE (and at least William DYAL, Thomas MOUNTS, and John VANCE) were in Harrison County until 1799. After 1800 Edward is not found in Harrison Co but is located in Mason County. William DOYAL remained in Harrison Co as there is a court record dated 29 March 1806 about William and a yellow bay horse, judged to be 3-years old, 14 hands and 8 inches high, appraised for $3.

13. There is further evidence that Simon, William, and Alexander DYAL were also in Harrison Co., KY 1797, 1799, and 1800 as their names appear in the court records as bondsmen and jury members, as well as tax payers. By 1803 Edward, Simon and Alexander were paying taxes in Mason County. Lewis County was not formed until 1806. After 1806 they paid taxes in Lewis County, along with Nancy DYAL, widow.

14. Mason County, Kentucky Tax Records shows Edward DILE as a Tax Payer in that county 3 Oct 1792. 1 white male over 21; 1 Black over 16, under 21; 3 horses/mules; and 15 cattle. John DYAL was also on the tax record as being a white male over 21, in 1792. The first time Alexander DYAL was shown on the Mason County Tax Record was in the Ohio District of Mason County in 1801. Simon and Edward OYAL were also listed as tax payers in that district in 1801. Perhaps this is when they moved from Harrison County. There are no tax records showing John DYAL having been in Harrison County.

Edward, and three of his sons, Alexander, John, and Simon DYAL are shown on the Lewis County, Kentucky Tax Records as soon as the county was formed from Mason County in 1807. This indicates they were living in that portion of Mason County which later became Lewis County, before Lewis County was formed. John was not shown on the Mason County Tax records in 1797, after he married Christina DAVIS, 6 April 1797. He may have been included with his father-in-law's tax records. Unfortunately only heads of household are named. Edward Doyle II was also known as Edward Doyle "The Younger".
