(?) Graham1

M
     He married Martha (?).
The beginnings of the Graham family of Hartford Township are, as yet, unknown. They were humble people, immigrants and farmers, who left little in the way of written record of their existence.

In their book, The Story of Hartford, Isabella Brayton and John Norton state that "Joseph Graham settled in town in 1798, " and " a little later he lived on the road south from Kincaid's Corners." They go on to say that Joseph had four children, Robert, John, David and Jane who married Ellis Eldridge. However, the notion that Joseph was the father of Robert, David, John and Jane is almost certainly incorrect. In his will, Robert names his daughter, Jane Eldridge. The 1800 US census of Hartford shows Joseph in age category 26 to 45, which would make his birth year between 1755 and 1774. The 1800 US Census shows Robert as age 26 to 45 and the 1810 US Census shows his age as over 45. Thus, he had to have been born between 1756 and 1765. The tombstones over the graves of David and John indicate they were born in 1757 and 1767 respectively. Therefore Joseph would have been far too young to have been the father of the other three men. Most likely, he was an older brother, or other close relative.

Much of my information on the first generation of Grahams in Hartford comes from the genealogical records of my mother, Mary Glennis Graham Turner, the great-grandaughter of David Graham. She cites as the source of her information data in old letters from family members to her father, data obtained from family memebers still living in the Hartford area, and most particularly, information written in an old Graham family Bible which she had the opportunity to examine in the 1950's. The present whereabouts of the "old Graham Bible" is unknown.

The earliest member of the family recorded in the old Bible is Martha Graham, who died on 9 May 1820 at age 90. She is doubtless the mother of David and John, and possibly of Robert and Joseph. The Bible makes no mention of her husband. She was probably living with David during the 1800 and 1810 US Census counts which show an older female (unnamed) in his household. She is buried in the Graham family plot of the West Hartford Cemetery, very near David and John.

David and John appear together in several civil records. Together, they purchased land in 1798 and in 1800. They appear together in the annual Hartford Town Meetings of 1801 and 1802, appointed as "Overseers of Highways." David acted as a witness for John's naturalization in 1811, and John was David's witness.

Joseph appears alone in the minutes of the Annual Town Meetings of 1798 and 1799, but is listed together with Robert in the Meetings of 1801 and 1802. When Robert is naturalized on the same day as David and John, John acts as his witness. There is no record of naturalization for Joseph. Neither Robert nor Joseph is buried in the Graham family plot at West Hartford Cemetery. Neither Robert nor Joseph is mentioned in the old family Bible. After 1802, there is no mention of Joseph in the Hartford area.2,3

He was born in 1757 at Scotland or Ireland.5,1,6 He was the son of (?) Graham and Martha (?).1

David Graham married Jane Liddle circa 1805. (an unknown value).7,8,9

David Graham died on 12 May 1827 at Hartford, Washington Co., New York.10,1,11 He was buried at West Hartford Cemetery, Hartford Twp, Washington Co., New York. His tombstone inscription reads, "In memory of David Grahm [or Gramm], died May 12, 1827, ae 70 years.".12,11
In the genealogical records of Mary Glennis Graham Turner, she cites an entry in the "Old Graham Bible" showing David as the son of Martha, and brother of John Graham.

From records pertaining to other members of the family, it appears that David and his brothers arrived in the Hartford, NY, area from Scotland and/or Ireland in the mid-1790's. The 1790 U.S. Census shows no David Graham in Washington County.1

David and John purchased 66 1/8 acres in Lot 16 of the Provincial Patent in Hartford Township from William and Sarah Sloan, a farmer from Westfield. The deed was not recorded until 27 July 1799.13,14

By an act of the NY State Legislature on 5 April 1798, David, John, Joseph and Robert Graham were granted authority to buy, hold and dispose of land, despite being aliens.15

The 1800 Census of Washington Co. shows a David Graham household in Hartford with 2 male adults, age 26-45, 1 female adult, age 45+, and 1 female child, age 0-10. The female adult would have been David's mother Martha. One of the male adults would be David (he was 43 in 1800), the other probably his brother, John, who is not shown as a head of household elsewhere in the census. The female child is unknown, possibly a daughter of John, or a child of an earlier wife of David's.4,3 David and John purchased 21 acres in Lot 24 of Hartford Township from Matthew McWhorter Jr of Salem Township.16,17

David, John, Robert, and Joseph Graham appeared at the Annual Town Meeting of Hartford Township, NY on 7 Apr 1801. All were appointed as Oversseers of Highways, responsible for maintaining their designated section of roadway. David and John shared responsibility for Lot 19; Joseph and Robert shared Lot 42. They also appear in the minutes of the Annual Town Meeting of Hartford on 10 April 1802. David and John are appointed Overseer of Highways for section 14, Robert and Joseph for section 42.18,19

In the 1810 U.S. Census, the David In the 1810 US Census, the David Graham household shows 1 male 45 & over (David, age 53 at the time), 3 males under 10 (David's sons John, David and Robert), 1 female 26-45 (David's wife, Jane), 1 female 10-16 (identity unknown, presumably the same person shown in the 1800 census as age 0-10), and 2 others (probably David's mother, Martha, and brother, John).3

David was naturalized on 12 March 1811 in Washington Co. His oath of allegiance was as follows: "I, David Graham, do swear and declare that I will support the Constitution of the United States and that I do absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to every foreign prince, potentate, state or sovereignty whatsoever, and particularly to the King of Great-Britain, of whom I have heretofore been a subject." The oath was witnessed by John Graham.20

David Graham left a will on 3 May 1827. In the will, he names his wife, Jane, and sons, John, David, Robert, Daniel, Joseph, and daughters, Martha, Jane, Nancy, and Mary.21
