Besides himself, he had in the household his mother, Jane, his uncle John, and three teenage girls, most likely his youngest sisters.1 He and Mary McCotter appeared on the census of 1850 at Hartford, Washington Co., New York; In the 1850 U.S. Census, after having married Mary McCotter about 1841, John shows as the head of a household composed of only his immediate family. In the genealogical record of Mary Glennis Graham Turner, she notes that John is mentioned in the "Old Graham Bible" as the son of Martha and brother of David.

In an Act passed 5 Apr 1798 by the NY State Legislature, David Graham, John Graham, Joseph Graham, and Robert Graham are listed together among resident aliens enabled to hold land in New York State.

In a Deed recorded 22 July 1799 and on file in the Washington Co., NY, Clerk's office, David and John Graham purchased land in block 16 of the Provincial Patent in the Town of Westbury for 150 pounds from William and Sarah Sloan.

The 1800 Census of Wash. Co. shows a David Graham household in Hartford with 2 male adults, age 26-45, 1 female adult, age 45+, and 1 female child, age 0-10. The female adult would have been David's mother Martha. One of the male adults would be David (he was 43 in 1800), the other probably his brother, John, who is not shown as a head of household elsewhere in the census. The female child is unknown, possibly a daughter of John, or a child of an earlier wife of David's.

In the records of the West Hartford Cemetery, the is a grave of a child, Hattie Graham, born 1800, died 1 Dec 1804, who is stated as being the child of a John and Mary Graham. One might be tempted to assume that this John is the father and that Hattie is the child shown in the 1800 Census of David Graham's household. However, the 1810 census appears to show the same unidentified child, 6 years after Hattie's death.

In the records of the Annual Town Meeting of Hartford, held at the Baptist Meeting House on 7 April 1801, listed as present were David Graham and John Graham.

In the 1810 U.S. Census, the David Graham household shows 1 male 45 & over (David, age 53 at the time), 3 males under 10 (David's sons John, David and Robert), 1 female 26-45 (David's wife, Jane), 1 female 10-16 (identity unknown, presumably the same person shown in the 1800 census as age 0-10), and 2 others (probably David's mother, Martha, and brother, John).

Again in the 1820 U.S. Census, in the Household of David Graham, there is a second adult male, over 45, who was probably John.

In 1830, when John would have been 63 (according to his tombstone inscription), there were 4 Graham households in Hartford listed in the U.S. Census. None had an adult male in the 60-70 age category. However, in the Household of Jane Graham, who would have been almost certainly the Jane who was the widow of David Graham, there was an adult male in the 70-80 age category. Even though the age doesn't correspond with other age data, this was probably John, continuing to live in the same house.

In 1840, the U.S. Census shows a household under the name of John Graham, David and Jane's son. There is an adult female, age 50-60, which would be Jane, and an adult male, 70-80, which would again be old John.

John died in 1843 having, apparently, never married. He is buried in West Hartford Cemetery.1 David and John purchased 66 1/8 acres in Lot 16 of the Provincial Patent in Hartford Township from William and Sarah Sloan, a farmer from Westfield. The deed was not recorded until 27 July 1799.5,6 By an act of the NY State Legislature on 5 April 1798, David, John, Joseph and Robert Graham were granted authority to buy, hold and dispose of land, despite being aliens.7 David and John purchased 21 acres in Lot 24 of Hartford Township from Matthew McWhorter Jr of Salem Township.8,9 He was naturalized on 12 March 1811 at Washington Co., New York.10

In the book, British Aliens In The United States During The War of 1812, by Kenneth Scott, there is listed a John Graham, age 24 years and 8 months (as of 16 Oct 1812), about 19 years in the U.S., wife Perlina, Hartford, Washington Co., farmer, came to U.S. with his parents at about age of 5, and his father was naturalized about 2 years previously.

In the files of the Hartford Town Historian, there is a letter from a researcher, Mrs. Z.P. (Dorothy) Boone, 409 Vine St., Martins Ferry, OH, dated 18 May 1987, in which she claims that the John Graham who is listed in Kenneth Scott's book is her great-grandfather. She states that John's wife, Perlina, either died, divorced him, or he left her. He turned up in York Co., PA, where he married Elizabeth Blaine in the Slate Ridge Church.

While I know of no evidence to support this claim, if it were true it would explain why there is no record of John in Hartford after the 1810 U.S. Census which shows him living in the household of his father, Robert Graham.6,7

He was born between 1755 and 1774.4 He was the son of (?) Graham and Martha (?).1 He married Diana Warren.5

In the book, The Story of Hartford, Joseph Graham is said to have "settled in town in 1798. A little later he lived on the road south from Kincaid's Corners." The book further describes him as the father of Robert, David and John, which is almost certainly incorrect. See discussion under Martha, his probable mother.

Evidence of his relationship to our Graham family is only circumstantial. In the genealogical record of Mary Glennis Graham Turner, which for that generation relies mainly on information in an "Old Graham Bible," she notes that Joseph's name is not mentioned in the Bible. Support for the hypothesis that he was a member of the family comes from the fact that he arrived in Hartford at about the same time as the other members, that his name is listed next to, or close by, the names of other family members on Town meeting minutes, the 1800 U.S. Census report, and an April 1798 Act by the NY State legislature to allow resident aliens to hold land in the state. Further, he is identified as a member of our family in the book, The Story of Hartford, even though the relationship shown is almost certainly incorrect.

In records of the Annual Town Meeting of Hartford, NY, held at Daniel Mason's, Esq. house on the first Tuesday of April 1798, Joseph Graham is listed as a "Path Master."

In the records of the Annual Town Meeting of Hartford, held at Joseph Boulton's on the first Tuesday of April, 1799, Joseph Graham is listed as one of the "Overseers of Highways."

The 1800 U.S. Census for Hartford Twp. lists Joseph Graham as a Head of Family, with a female, age 16-26 (presumably his wife), and a female, age under 10.

No further record of him after 1800 has been found.1,6 He resided in April 1798 at Hartford, Washington Co., New York; He appeared at the Annual Town Meeting of Hartford, NY in April 1798, and in April 1799 where he was appointed Overseer of Highways for Lot 42 .7,8 By an act of the NY State Legislature on 5 April 1798, David, John, Joseph and Robert Graham were granted authority to buy, hold and dispose of land, despite being aliens.9
