John Railtonne1
M, b. 22 March 1661/62
John Railtonne was born on 22 March 1661/62 at Cadder Parish, East Dunbartonshire, Scotland, U.K..1
The origin of the surname "Ralston" is obscure. George Crawford, in his 18th century book, The History Of The Shire of Renfrew, states that "Ralph, the younger son of MacDuff, Thane of Fife," obtained a grant of land in Renfrewshire (Scotland) and called part of it "Ralphstown." This term later became corrupted into various versions until it settled as Ralston as we know it today.
MacDuff, Thane of Fife, appears in Shakespeare's play, "Macbeth," where he opposes Macbeth and assists Malcom to the throne of Scotland. Later historians have disputed the legends upon which Shakespeare based his work, so the connection between the surname Ralston and MacDuff is clouded.
The name Ralston first appears in records in Renfrewshire as the Barony of Ralston, near Paisley, in charters as far back as 1272 and 1346. Early in the 15th century, John de Ralston or Ralphstown was the Lord High Treasurer and Bishop of Dunkeld.1
Identifying John Railtonne as father of John Ralton is based on research by The Scots' Ancestry Research Society, commissioned by Ralston descendant Blake Rutledge of Alberta, Canada. They speculated that it is likely that John Railtonne was the father of John Ralton but found insufficient records to establish proof. Without such proof, it is prudent to conclude that John Ralton, b. ca 1685, is the earliest known ancestor of our Ralston line, and John Railtonne's name is included here only for possible future investigation.1
