     John Scobee was also known as I. John Scobee . This version of his name is used by some of the family historians. I believe it originated from an erroneous reading of his Oath of Enlistment which began, "I John Scobee, born in Berkeley County, Virginia..." The comma normally preceding "John" was missing or illegible.¹⁴

From later census, Robert is known to have stayed in Ralls Co., so that is where Mary is presumed to have been born. The 1850 US Census for the household of Allen Rouse of Ralls Co., who in 1845 married Mary Upton Scobee, Robert's 2nd wife, shows a child Mary, age 10.^2,3 She was the daughter of Robert Scobee and Mary Upton.²
