Samuel Turner Sr.1,2,3,4,5,6

M, b. 1758, d. 17 April 1847
He may also have been born in 1758 at Culpeper Co., Virginia, according to his application for a Revolutionary War pension. The date as it was written by the person to whom Samuel was dictating his application (Samuel was illiterate) was indistinct and may possibly have been 1753. However, sworn depositions by his neighbors in Ralls County in 1833 state that he was 75 years old. The date of 1758 has been used by many researchers.7,1,4,8 He was born in 1753 at Culpeper Co., Virginia; according to the strongest sources. According to his great grandson, Alfred H. Turner, he was born in 1752. According to the book, Revolutionary Soldiers Buried In Missouri, Samuel would have been born about 1753. The book, Historical Register of Virginians in the Revolution, states that he was approximately 79 years old as of 1833, which would date his birth in about 1754. The 1840 US Census of Rev War Veterans in Missouri shows his age as 87, indicating a birth year of 1753.5,4,2,9

Samuel Turner Sr. married Abigail Haines, daughter of Levi Haines and Elizabeth Andrews, on 3 January 1793 at Culpeper Co., VA, with the ceremony performed by William Mason, Baptist Minister of Gourdvine Parish.10,11,12

Samuel Turner Sr. died on 17 April 1847 at Ralls Co., Missouri; the location of his grave is not known.4,1,13

Samuel Turner Sr. began military service circa March 1781 drafted into the Virginia Militia at age 23, in the rank of Private. He served three months in Captain Robert Pollard's Company in Colonel Slaughter's Virginia regiment and was at the Battle of Petersburg.3,14,2 He ended military service in June 1781, released during the summer to go home and harvest the crops, along with many other men from his unit.14,3

He was recalled to active duty again in September 1781, assigned to Captain F. Covington's Company in Colonels James Barbour and E. Edmund's Virginia Regiment. He participated in the Seige of Yorktown, the final battle of the Revolutionary War.3,14,2 He ended military service circa November 1781; released from active duty at the conclusion of the War.3,14

He appeared on the Culpeper county tax rolls in 1787 as a head of a household.6 According to parish history, Gourdvine Parish, which was 12 miles north of the Culpeper County seat, was constituted March 11th, 1791, with William Mason as the first pastor.15

In 1810, he moved his family to Clark Co., KY, according to a biographical entry on his son, Levi Haines Turner, in History of Nebraska, Washington County.16

Samuel Turner Sr. appeared on the census of 1810 at Clark Co., Kentucky; with the report listing the number of persons in his household as follows: males: 3 under age 10; 2 between 10 and 16; 1 over 45; females: 2 under 10; 2 between 10 and 16; 1 over 45.17

Samuel Turner Sr. appeared on the census of 1820 at Clark Co., Kentucky; The census report shows 2 males ages 10-16 which would be Levi Haines and an unidentified boy; 1 male age 16-18 which would be Samuel [Jr]; 1 male 18-26 which would be William; 1 male >45 which would be Samuel [Sr]; 2 females ages 16-26 which would be Hester and another young woman; and 1 female >45 which would be Abigail. The unidentified woman might have been one of Samuel's married daughters temporarily staying with her parents, but none of the daughters had sons old enough to be the unidentified boy. She may have been another unattached woman and her son staying with the Turners.18

Around 1822, he and his family moved on to Ralls County, Missouri, where Samuel and Abigail lived for the rest of their lives.14,5

Samuel Turner Sr. appeared on the census of 1830 at Ralls Co., Missouri; the report shows 2 males age 20-30 which would be William and Levi, and 1 male 70-80 which would be Samuel.19

On 22 April 1831, in Ralls Co., he purchased 80 acres of public land from General Land Office; legal description is East 1/2 of NW Quarter of Sec 34, Twnshp 55N, Range 7W, 5th PM. Other owners in Sec 34 are Ezra S. Ely, Thomas S. Grimes, Elisha Rouse, Nancy Tanner, and Adam Utterback. Purchase was patented 1 Jun 1832 and signed by Secretary 24 Apr 1833..20

15 December 1835, in Ralls Co., he purchased 40 acres of public land from General Land Office; the legal description was SWSW Sec 35 Twnshp 55N Range 7W 5th PM. Other nearby owners were James Leake, William Green, and Cornelius Baker.21

Again, 2 November 1837, he purchased 38.75 acres of public land from General Land Office; legal description: NWNW Sec 2, Twnshp 54N Range 7W 5th PM. Other nearby landowners were James W. Higgins, Henry Leake, John H. Leake, Robert Scobee, Charles Starr.22

Samuel Turner Sr. appeared on the census of 1840 at Salt River Twp, Ralls Co., Missouri; The census report shows 1 male 5-10, 1 male 30-40, which are both unidentified, 1 male 15-20,and 1 male 80-90 which is Samuel. It also shows 2 females under 5, 1 female 5-10, 1 female 10-15, and 1 female 30-40, which are all unidentified. It appears as if another family, perhaps that of one of Samuel's daughters, was staying with him at the time.23 He also appeared on the census of 1840 at Salt River, Ralls Co., Missouri, Revolutionary War Veterans; shows his age as 87.9

On 1 June, 1840, at age 87, he was declared a Revolutionary War Pensioner.24,25
