He was probably born on 8 September 1825 at New London, Ralls Co., Missouri. All known date references give his birth month as September. The 1850 US Census gives his age as 26, indicating he was born in 1824. The 1860 US Census gives his age as 38. The enumeration was made on 13 June, before Aaron's birthday , so if the enumerator was precise, Aaron would have been born in 1823. In the 1880 Census his age is given as 54, indicating he was born in 1826. In the 1830 Census, he is shown as under 5 yrs., so he could not have been born before 1825. In a Declaration accompanying his Pension Application, on 11 Aug 1890, he gives his age as 65. If he meant to be exact, then he would have been born in 1826-- but if he was giving his age to the nearest year, then he would have been born in 1825. In three separate applications for admission to the Washington Soldier's Home, in 1898, 1899, and 1901, he gives the same date of birth: 8 Sep 1823. However, medical examinations taken in conjunction with these applications, show that he was suffering from senility by that time. His death certificate, based on an unidentified informant, gives his date of birth as 14 Sep 1822. But the certificate also states that his age was 77 at death on 13 June 1901. Were that the case, he would have been born in 1824.
In all three applications to the Washington Soldier's Home, he gave Virginia as his place of birth, in one specifically stating Culpeper Co., VA. However, this is undoubtedly the result of his decreased mental ability at that time. We know from the 1810 US Census of Clark Co., KY, and the biographical sketch of his father's brother, Levi Turner, that his parents had migrated to Kentucky by 1810 and were almost surely in Missouri by 1823.5,6,1,7,8,9,10,11,12 He was the son of Samuel Turner Jr. and Elizabeth Scobee.1
Aaron Turner married Elizabeth Shaver, daughter of George Shaver and Elizabeth Dial, on 2 August 1848 at New London, Ralls Co., MO.2,3,13
Aaron Turner died on 13 June 1901 at Seattle, King Co., Washington, at age 75.14,3 He was buried at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Seattle, King Co., Washington; according to his Death Certificate. During a visit to the cemetery in October 1999, it was learned that cemetery records from that period were destroyed in a fire and reconstructed records did not show record of his burial. A grave marker could not be found.5

Aaron Turner appeared on the census of 1850 at Gilead, Calhoun Co., Illinois; The census report lists him as age 26, born in MO, living with wife, Elizabeth, and child, Sarah E. His property was enumerated two places removed from that of his father, Samuel [Jr].12
Aaron Turner and Elizabeth Shaver resided at Calhoun Co., IL, in 1850 their location was on property legally described as the SW qtr of the SW qtr, Section 9, Twnshp 12S, Range 2W, 4th PM- 1815 Illinois..2,15
Aaron Turner appeared on the census of 1860 at Lick Creek, Salt River Twp, Ralls Co., Missouri.16
Aaron Turner began military service on 1 August 1864 at New London, Ralls Co., MO, enlisted as a Private and was mustered into service in Company E, 39th Regiment of the Missouri Infantry, Union volunteers. The 39th Regiment was organized in Hannibal, MO, between 18 Aug and 30 Sep 1864. it was attached to District of St. Louis, Dept. of Missouri to Nov, 1864; Nashville, TN, Dept. of The Cumberland to Dec 1864; District of Kentucky, Dept. of Ohio, to Jan 1865; District of Nashville, TN, Dept of the Cumberland, Jan 1865; and District of St. Louis, MO, to July 1865.
During Sep 1864, his unit, Company E, under the command of Lieutenant George W. Weldy was ordered to proceed to Ralls County, and scout through the country for bushmen and thieves. The company apparently remained there until early Mar 1865 when it was moved to Glasgow, MO. Company E was disbanded on 20 Mar 1865, and the Regiment was mustered out 19 Jul 1865. Pvt. Turner appeared on the rolls of Company E from 8 Sep to 31 Oct 1864. On 27 Oct 1864, he was sent to the Regimental General Hospital, reasons unknown. He was recorded as present for duty in Co. E from Nov until he mustered out.17,18,19
Upwards of 2,500 men have been said to have participated in some form of guerrilla activity in Missouri between 1861 and 1865. Estimates have established that approximately 600 men rode with Quantrill during the course of the war.
In an excerpt from his book, Quantrill's Thieves, Joseph K. Houts describes a typical action during the period that Pvt Aaron Turner was serving: Before the day was out, 149 Union soldiers had been killed, more pointedly murdered, by Anderson and his cutthroats. At first 23 unarmed Union troops were removed from an entering locomotive to the town, stripped to their underwear and then summarily executed. The town was ransacked and the guerrillas indulged themselves to inebriation upon finding a barrel of whiskey. In time, the horde was joined with Todd and Thrailkill's bands. All total, nearly 250 to 300 guerrillas were now assembled as one group. Within an hour a contingent of 147 Union troops arrived, known as the 39th Missouri State Militia, under the command of Major A. E. V. Johnson. The unit was newly formed and at best could be considered "green" in its lack of training, experience and supplies. Their mounts consisted of former plow horses and instead of carrying carbines and revolvers, the troops possessed single-shot Enfield rifles. The best of soldiers could only reload and fire a rifle three times in a minute, let alone raw recruits facing experienced guerrillas carrying three to six six-shooter revolvers with a firepower of 36 shots in a minute.20
Aaron Turner was mustered out of military service on 25 March 1865 at Macon, MO.17
Aaron Turner appeared on the census of 1870 at Hannibal, Marion Co., Missouri.21 He appeared on the census of 1880 at Union, Marion Co., Missouri; living on a farm with his wife and several of his sons. The children named in the census were John A., Stephen A., Alfred H., Levi M., and Robert R. Turner. Occupation listed as Farmer.22
On 6 Feb 1882, he filed an application for a Civil War Pension, Application # 439320, Certificate # 867202, for service in Co. E, 39th MO Inf.. It was filed in the State of Nebraska where he was living for a short period, perhaps a year or so. His pension was approved as of 22 Aug 1890, at a rate of $8.50 per month.
Sometime between later in 1882 and 1884, he and his family moved to Washington Territory, and settled on homestead land on Lake Tahuya, near Seabeck in Kitsap County. In his later application for admission to the Washington Soldier's Home in 1898, he stated that he had been a resident of the state since 5 April 1884. In an application for re-admission to the Home in 1899, he stated that had been a state resident since 1881. In his third application, for re-admission in 1901, he repeated his first assertion, that he had been a resident since 1884.
On 8 Dec 1890, he sold a piece of property in Kitsap County, WA, to Robert R. Turner, most likely his son, Robert. The property description was Lot 1, Section 30, Twnshp 24N, Range 1W, W.M.
On 16 Nov 1891, he mortgaged a portion of his property in Kitsap Co., to the Oregon Mortgage Company. The property description was: the SE qtr of the NE qtr and the NE qtr of the SE qtr of Section 25, Twnshp 24N, Range 2W and also the SW qtr of the SW qtr (Lot 2) of Section 30, Twnshp 24N, Range 1W, W.M., containing 124.38 acres.
On 11 August 1890, he was declared disabled.
On 3 Aug 1892, he mortgaged some of his property in Kitsap County. The mortgage is recorded in 2 documents, giving a primary and second mortgage to the same company, Guarantee Loan and Trust Company. The property description was Lot 2, Section 30, Twnshp 24N, Range 1W; and the SE qtr of the NE qtr and the SE qtr of the NE qtr of Section 20, Twnshp 24N, Range 2W, W.M., in all 124.3 acres.
On 12 Feb 1892, he was awarded a homestead certificate for the property he had settled in Kitsap County. The property description was Lots 1 and 2 of Section 30, Twnshp 24N, Range 1W; and the SE qtr of the NE qtr and the NE qtr of the SE qtr of Section 25, Twnship 24N, Range 2W, W.M., containing 168.20 acres.
On 13 Jan 1893, he sold property in Kitsap Co., to his son, Alfred H. Turner. The property description was Lot 2 of Section 30, Twnshp 24N, Range 1W, and the SE qtr of the NE qtr and the NE qtr of the SE qtr of Section 25, Twnshp 24N, Range 2W, W.M., containing 124.10 acres.23,24,25,26,27,28,29,30,31,32,33,7,8,9
He applied for admission to Washington Soldier's Home at Orting, WA, on 5 April 1898. He stated that he had 11 children, was a machinist, was a widower, was unable to support himself by manual labor, and his nearest relative was Frances Simson of Ballard, WA. A physician stated that he was disabled due to senility.
On 25 Sep 1899, he applied for re-admission to the Washington Soldier's Home. He stated that he had 6 children, was single, was an engineer, and his nearest relative was Mary E. Johnson of Gate City, WA (since Gate City is adjacent to Orting, it is assumed that this person was a Soldier's Home employee- she cannot otherwise be identified). A physician stated that he suffered from a hernia and general debility, but was able to wait on himself.
On 4 Jan 1901, he again applied for re-admission to the Washington Soldier's Home. He stated that he had 6 children, was a widower, was a farmer, was born on 8 Sep 1823 in Virginia, and his nearest relative was George Turner of Ballard, WA. A physician stated that he was totally disabled due to general debility.7,8,34,9

Aaron Turner and Elizabeth Shaver resided at Calhoun Co., IL, in 1850 their location was on property legally described as the SW qtr of the SW qtr, Section 9, Twnshp 12S, Range 2W, 4th PM- 1815 Illinois..2,15
Aaron Turner appeared on the census of 1860 at Lick Creek, Salt River Twp, Ralls Co., Missouri.16
Aaron Turner began military service on 1 August 1864 at New London, Ralls Co., MO, enlisted as a Private and was mustered into service in Company E, 39th Regiment of the Missouri Infantry, Union volunteers. The 39th Regiment was organized in Hannibal, MO, between 18 Aug and 30 Sep 1864. it was attached to District of St. Louis, Dept. of Missouri to Nov, 1864; Nashville, TN, Dept. of The Cumberland to Dec 1864; District of Kentucky, Dept. of Ohio, to Jan 1865; District of Nashville, TN, Dept of the Cumberland, Jan 1865; and District of St. Louis, MO, to July 1865.
During Sep 1864, his unit, Company E, under the command of Lieutenant George W. Weldy was ordered to proceed to Ralls County, and scout through the country for bushmen and thieves. The company apparently remained there until early Mar 1865 when it was moved to Glasgow, MO. Company E was disbanded on 20 Mar 1865, and the Regiment was mustered out 19 Jul 1865. Pvt. Turner appeared on the rolls of Company E from 8 Sep to 31 Oct 1864. On 27 Oct 1864, he was sent to the Regimental General Hospital, reasons unknown. He was recorded as present for duty in Co. E from Nov until he mustered out.17,18,19
Upwards of 2,500 men have been said to have participated in some form of guerrilla activity in Missouri between 1861 and 1865. Estimates have established that approximately 600 men rode with Quantrill during the course of the war.
In an excerpt from his book, Quantrill's Thieves, Joseph K. Houts describes a typical action during the period that Pvt Aaron Turner was serving: Before the day was out, 149 Union soldiers had been killed, more pointedly murdered, by Anderson and his cutthroats. At first 23 unarmed Union troops were removed from an entering locomotive to the town, stripped to their underwear and then summarily executed. The town was ransacked and the guerrillas indulged themselves to inebriation upon finding a barrel of whiskey. In time, the horde was joined with Todd and Thrailkill's bands. All total, nearly 250 to 300 guerrillas were now assembled as one group. Within an hour a contingent of 147 Union troops arrived, known as the 39th Missouri State Militia, under the command of Major A. E. V. Johnson. The unit was newly formed and at best could be considered "green" in its lack of training, experience and supplies. Their mounts consisted of former plow horses and instead of carrying carbines and revolvers, the troops possessed single-shot Enfield rifles. The best of soldiers could only reload and fire a rifle three times in a minute, let alone raw recruits facing experienced guerrillas carrying three to six six-shooter revolvers with a firepower of 36 shots in a minute.20
Aaron Turner was mustered out of military service on 25 March 1865 at Macon, MO.17
Aaron Turner appeared on the census of 1870 at Hannibal, Marion Co., Missouri.21 He appeared on the census of 1880 at Union, Marion Co., Missouri; living on a farm with his wife and several of his sons. The children named in the census were John A., Stephen A., Alfred H., Levi M., and Robert R. Turner. Occupation listed as Farmer.22
On 6 Feb 1882, he filed an application for a Civil War Pension, Application # 439320, Certificate # 867202, for service in Co. E, 39th MO Inf.. It was filed in the State of Nebraska where he was living for a short period, perhaps a year or so. His pension was approved as of 22 Aug 1890, at a rate of $8.50 per month.
Sometime between later in 1882 and 1884, he and his family moved to Washington Territory, and settled on homestead land on Lake Tahuya, near Seabeck in Kitsap County. In his later application for admission to the Washington Soldier's Home in 1898, he stated that he had been a resident of the state since 5 April 1884. In an application for re-admission to the Home in 1899, he stated that had been a state resident since 1881. In his third application, for re-admission in 1901, he repeated his first assertion, that he had been a resident since 1884.
On 8 Dec 1890, he sold a piece of property in Kitsap County, WA, to Robert R. Turner, most likely his son, Robert. The property description was Lot 1, Section 30, Twnshp 24N, Range 1W, W.M.
On 16 Nov 1891, he mortgaged a portion of his property in Kitsap Co., to the Oregon Mortgage Company. The property description was: the SE qtr of the NE qtr and the NE qtr of the SE qtr of Section 25, Twnshp 24N, Range 2W and also the SW qtr of the SW qtr (Lot 2) of Section 30, Twnshp 24N, Range 1W, W.M., containing 124.38 acres.
On 11 August 1890, he was declared disabled.
On 3 Aug 1892, he mortgaged some of his property in Kitsap County. The mortgage is recorded in 2 documents, giving a primary and second mortgage to the same company, Guarantee Loan and Trust Company. The property description was Lot 2, Section 30, Twnshp 24N, Range 1W; and the SE qtr of the NE qtr and the SE qtr of the NE qtr of Section 20, Twnshp 24N, Range 2W, W.M., in all 124.3 acres.
On 12 Feb 1892, he was awarded a homestead certificate for the property he had settled in Kitsap County. The property description was Lots 1 and 2 of Section 30, Twnshp 24N, Range 1W; and the SE qtr of the NE qtr and the NE qtr of the SE qtr of Section 25, Twnship 24N, Range 2W, W.M., containing 168.20 acres.
On 13 Jan 1893, he sold property in Kitsap Co., to his son, Alfred H. Turner. The property description was Lot 2 of Section 30, Twnshp 24N, Range 1W, and the SE qtr of the NE qtr and the NE qtr of the SE qtr of Section 25, Twnshp 24N, Range 2W, W.M., containing 124.10 acres.23,24,25,26,27,28,29,30,31,32,33,7,8,9
He applied for admission to Washington Soldier's Home at Orting, WA, on 5 April 1898. He stated that he had 11 children, was a machinist, was a widower, was unable to support himself by manual labor, and his nearest relative was Frances Simson of Ballard, WA. A physician stated that he was disabled due to senility.
On 25 Sep 1899, he applied for re-admission to the Washington Soldier's Home. He stated that he had 6 children, was single, was an engineer, and his nearest relative was Mary E. Johnson of Gate City, WA (since Gate City is adjacent to Orting, it is assumed that this person was a Soldier's Home employee- she cannot otherwise be identified). A physician stated that he suffered from a hernia and general debility, but was able to wait on himself.
On 4 Jan 1901, he again applied for re-admission to the Washington Soldier's Home. He stated that he had 6 children, was a widower, was a farmer, was born on 8 Sep 1823 in Virginia, and his nearest relative was George Turner of Ballard, WA. A physician stated that he was totally disabled due to general debility.7,8,34,9

In late 2007, he developed several gangrenous sores on his feet and, in the same period, became mentally unable to care for himself.
In January, 2008, he entered an assisted living facility, Merrill Gardens At Northgate in Seattle. However, after a couple weeks, the cascading effect of his multiple medical problems required that he be hospitalized, at the University of Washington Medical Center. Despite intensive treatment of his leg sores, it became necessary to amputate his left leg above the knee in March. Then, in the first week of April, his body started to refuse dialysis. With no treatment options remaining, he was transferred to the Evergreen Hospice, in Kirkland.6
